In brief

Take the Shinkansen to Kanazawa, Toyama or Fukui, hire a car at the station and drive a 2 to 3 day loop built around food and a good night's sleep. Winter routes stay on the ploughed expressways and need winter tyres.

Where the train stops short

The Hokuriku Shinkansen is fast, but Gokayama, Shirakawa-go, the Echizen coast and the Wakasa lakes sit off the line, and the buses to them are few. A car joins them into one trip. Each page here gives the days, the distance and drive time from a routing engine (road data from OpenStreetMap, no traffic), the food for each day and the stay for each night.

Road trips

Four are live; the next ones are on their way.

Before you drive

Six essentials

The same rules apply to every route here.

  1. 01
Licence. Taiwan: your licence plus an official Japanese translation (JAF issues them in Japan). Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium and Monaco follow the same rule. Everyone else needs an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, valid for one year from entry. Hong Kong and mainland China licences: ask the hire company before you book.
  2. 02
Winter tyres. Some Hokuriku hire companies fit them as standard from mid December to late March; others charge extra. NEXCO sets winter-tyre controls on the expressways when snow falls, and cars without them are not allowed on. Ask for the dates when you book.
  3. 03
ETC card. Rent one with the car. The Kanazawa Higashi interchange becomes ETC-only from 16 December 2026, and tolls then come off the card at drop-off.
  4. 04
Tolls and parking. Tolls are charged by distance; each trip page names its expressways, and NEXCO Central's route search gives the price for your car. Village car parks charge small fees, and Shirakawa-go charges ¥2,000 a car, so carry cash.
  5. 05
Kei cars. Yellow-plate kei cars fit narrow village lanes and cost less, but have little luggage space. A pair with two cases wants a compact.
  6. 06
One-way hire. Dropping the car in another prefecture carries a fee that the booking page shows. Ask when you reserve; the figure changes by company and season.
