Happo is the default: walk to Happo-One's gondola and to dinner. Wadano and Echoland are a shuttle ride away, quieter or livelier respectively. Iwatake and the hillside are for onsen and views. Goryu has the best-value ski-in rooms.
Coming from Itoigawa, Toyama or Kanazawa by train, look north: Cortina and Norikura are 20 minutes from Minami-Otari, where you change trains, and Hotel Green Plaza Hakuba sends a free shuttle to meet you.
The one big ski hotel that works for a rail traveller from the Hokuriku side. Ski-in, ski-out at the foot of Cortina, the resort with the valley's heaviest snowfall records, with its own Bijin-no-yu hot spring (11 baths) and a free shuttle from Minami-Otari, 1 hour from Itoigawa. Book the shuttle by 20:00 the day before. Evenings are quiet: this is a place to ski, soak and sleep.
