Sep–NovHakuba is on the JR Ōito Line, which runs down from Itoigawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen. From the Hokuriku side that is the way in; from Tokyo, most people take the Shinkansen to Nagano and a bus.
From Itoigawa: JR Ōito Line, change at Minami-Otari, 1h 30m–2h 10m, ¥880; or the JR West direct bus in 1h 25m (October, and 1 December–31 March). From Toyama: Shinkansen to Itoigawa first, 2h 51m, ¥4,200. From Tokyo: Shinkansen to Nagano and the Alpico bus, about 3 hours.

Alpine Route →Shinkansen Toyama → Nagano (about 1h), then the Alpico bus. Costs more and takes as long; useful when the Ōito Line is suspended by snow.
From Nagano Station East Exit to the Happo Bus Terminal, Hakuba Station, Goryu, Iwatake and, in winter, Tsugaike and Norikura. Tokyo to Nagano by Shinkansen is 1h 17m (¥8,450 reserved), so about 3 hours door to door. The 2026–27 winter timetable is not out yet.
Limited Express Azusa 5 leaves Shinjuku at 08:00 and reaches Hakuba at 11:40, daily in the October 2026 timetable; Azusa 38 returns at 13:43. Other Azusa trains end at Matsumoto (Ōito Line local to Hakuba, about 2 hours, ¥1,230).

The Arch Pass map includes the whole JR Ōito Line, so a Kanazawa → Itoigawa → Hakuba trip is fully covered.
No. Every trip changes at Minami-Otari, where JR West's line from Itoigawa meets JR East's line to Hakuba. One ticket (¥880) covers both. The direct option is the JR West bus, which runs in October and from 1 December to 31 March (not 28–31 December).
Yes on the trains: both passes cover the Ōito Line from Itoigawa to Hakuba, and the JR Pass also covers the Azusa from Shinjuku. Neither covers the Alpico buses from Nagano or the Hakuba Valley shuttles.
JR West sometimes cancels Itoigawa–Minami-Otari trains in advance and runs no replacement. Check JR West train information before leaving Itoigawa; in winter the JR bus is the backup, or come via Nagano by bus.
About 1h 10m to Hakuba Station and the Happo Bus Terminal on the Alpico express bus from Nagano Station East Exit. ¥3,500 in winter, ¥2,900 from April to November; pay at the ticket machine or on board. The 2026–27 winter timetable is not out yet.
From 15 April to 30 November, yes: the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route crosses to Ōgizawa, a bus runs to Shinano-Ōmachi and the Ōito Line reaches Hakuba in 39 minutes. ¥14,360 + ¥530, a full day with stops. In 2026 there is no direct Ōgizawa–Hakuba bus.
