In brief

The Kurobe Unazuki Canyon Route (黒部宇奈月キャニオンルート) is an 18 km works route inside the mountain between Keyakidaira, the last stop of the Kurobe Gorge Railway, and Kurobe Dam on the Alpine Route. Tours began on 2 October 2026 and run to the end of November. You cannot walk in: it is sold only as a one-night guided tour through travel agencies, about ¥130,000–¥140,000 per person with the hotel, the Alpine Route and railway fares and a guide included. Four courses, 20 or 30 people a day, about 2,700 seats for the whole first season.

What it is

Nippon Electric Power and Kansai Electric built the passage to put up the power stations on the Kurobe River. Kurobegawa No. 3 began generating in 1940, and the Kuroyon dam and power station (黒部川第四発電所) were finished in 1963. Until 2023 the only way through was Kansai Electric’s own lottery tours. Toyama prefecture and the company agreed in 2018 to open it to the public as a tour product. The opening planned for 2024 stopped after the 1 January 2024 earthquake damaged the Kanetsuri bridge on the gorge railway. The railway ran to Keyakidaira again on 1 October 2026 and the first tours left the next day.

It is not a hike, and you do not see the gorge from it. Almost the whole route is in tunnel, so what you get is machinery, hot rock and engineering, with three lookouts: the shaft lift, the Sennindani bridge and the Taru-zawa side tunnel. It is also the only link between the gorge and the Alpine Route.

I rode the Kurobe Gorge Railway on 25 October 2026. There were adverts for the new Canyon Route everywhere, on the platforms and along the line.

What you ride and see

Six stages, from the torokko to the dam

Described from the Unazuki side. Courses C and D run it in the other direction.

01

Keyakidaira and the works tram欅平

Gorge railway to Keyakidaira, 80 min from Unazuki

The tour starts where the sightseeing torokko ends. At Keyakidaira you change to a works tram that runs 500 m into the tunnel in 3 minutes. The rails connect all the way to Unazuki, so freight wagons can run straight through. JTB opened a lounge on the station’s second floor on 1 October 2026 for the security check, helmets, drinks and, on some courses, lunch.

Vertical shaft lift and lookout竪坑エレベーター

Keyakidaira lower to upper · then 5 min on foot

Installed in 1939 because the slope was too steep for track, and for a time the largest height difference of any lift in Japan. It rises 200 m in 2 minutes. The floor carries rails so a wagon can roll straight in, and it is wet and slippery at the bottom, so mind the rail grooves.

A 5-minute walk from the top station leads to the shaft lookout, with Okukane-yama (奥鐘山, 1,543 m) straight ahead and Hakuba-Yarigatake, which you cannot see from Keyakidaira station. Course B does not include this lookout.

High-heat tunnel and Sennindani高熱隧道・仙人谷

Battery locomotive on the upper works railway · 6.5 km

A battery locomotive takes you 6.5 km in 32 minutes through the 高熱隧道. When it was dug in the 1930s the rock passed 160°C and dynamite went off by itself. The rock is still about 40°C, and you feel the heat and smell sulphur from inside the car.

Past the tunnel the train stops at Sennindani on a steel bridge 859 m above sea level, with Sennindani Dam in front and the 165 m Kumokiri Falls (雲切の滝) behind.

Kuroyon power station and the incline黒四発電所・インクライン

End of the upper railway · then the incline, 20 min

The upper railway ends at Kurobegawa No. 4 Power Station, built entirely underground because it sits in a national park. You then ride the incline, finished in 1959 to carry equipment for the station: 815 m long at 34°, 20 minutes up or down. Digging a long, steep shaft like this had no precedent anywhere in the world, according to the route’s own history.

Kurobe Tunnel bus and Taru-zawa黒部トンネル・タル沢横坑

Private electric bus, 40 min · 10.2 km

From the top of the incline a private electric bus runs 10.2 km through the Kurobe Tunnel, which has five side tunnels. At Taru-zawa the bus stops and you walk to a lookout at the mouth of the side tunnel for Ura-Tsurugi (裏剱), Mount Tsurugi seen from the side that climbers see, with the glacier on its snow gully, which the route bills as the southernmost in the Far East. You see it on a clear day only.

Kurobe Dam and the Alpine Route黒部ダム

End of the route · Alpine Route to Tateyama or Ōgizawa

The route comes out at Kurobe Dam. Courses A and B end here, and you carry on down the Alpine Route toward Tateyama on your own. Courses C and D run the other way and arrive at Keyakidaira, where the torokko takes you down to Unazuki.

Before you book

Who can go, and what to bring

The route is still inside Kansai Electric’s working facilities, so the old lottery-tour rules carry over.

  1. 01
Age 11 and over. That is the prefecture’s rule. JTB’s page also says elementary-school children and younger cannot apply, so ask the agent before booking for an 11-year-old.
  2. 02
You must manage vehicles and stairs unaided. There are many changes between vehicles, dark tunnels and stairs. Walking sticks, other walking aids and wheelchairs are not allowed.
  3. 03
Not for some people. Pregnant women, people who get motion sickness easily and people with a severe fear of enclosed spaces or heights are asked not to join.
  4. 04
Trousers, flat shoes, one small backpack. The vehicles are cramped, so keep luggage to one backpack that sits on your knees. Some packages forward large bags. For the Alpine Route, see luggage forwarding.
  5. 05
A helmet is compulsory. The tour provides it. A guide goes with you throughout and a safety escort comes inside the works area.
  6. 06
No same-day, no part-route, no return. You cannot join on the day, go without the night, ride only Keyakidaira to the dam, go there and back, or leave the group early. You can step off for the sights, but not out of the tour.
  7. 07
Photography and weather. The official site does not publish photography rules or the weather cancellation terms. Ask your agent for both in writing before you pay.
Plan the trip

Canyon Route and Alpine Route as one trip

The direction decides where you sleep. Allow two days at least, and check the last Alpine Route connections for the day.

From Unazuki
宇

Courses A and B: up the gorge, finish at the dam

Night in Unazuki (A) or Toyama (B)

Shinkansen to Kurobe-Unazukionsen, then the Toyama Chiho Railway to Unazuki Onsen (26 min, ¥740). Next morning the torokko to Keyakidaira, the route, and a finish at Kurobe Dam. From there you go on alone down the Alpine Route toward Tateyama. If it gets late, ask your agent about a night on the mountain or leaving by Ōgizawa.

立

Course D: Alpine Route first, torokko last

Start at Tateyama Station, night in Unazuki

The Alpine Route to Kurobe Dam in the morning, the route in the afternoon, then the torokko down from Keyakidaira and a ryokan in Unazuki. The gorge railway is the last leg, so the day depends on the last public trains down, which leave Keyakidaira at 16:43 to 23 November and 16:01 from 24 November.

大

Course C: from Ōmachi, the Nagano side

Night in Ōmachi Onsenkyō, finish at Unazuki

The only course that starts in Nagano: bus to Ōgizawa, the tunnel to Kurobe Dam, the route, and the torokko down to Unazuki. It suits a trip from Tokyo by way of Matsumoto: you finish at Unazuki and take the Shinkansen home from Kurobe-Unazukionsen.

FAQ

Canyon Route questions, answered

Can I visit the Kurobe Unazuki Canyon Route without a tour?

No. The route is inside Kansai Electric’s working facilities, and the only way in is a guided tour with a night’s stay sold by travel agencies. There are no same-day places, no stay-free options and no Keyakidaira to Kurobe Dam only tickets. The sightseeing railway to Keyakidaira is open to everyone, but the works section is not.

How much does the Canyon Route tour cost?

About ¥140,000 per person for Course A, the prefecture’s estimate, with Toyama-side departures reported from ¥130,000. That covers the hotel, the Alpine Route and gorge railway fares, a guide, a briefing, a safety escort and meals. Travel to Toyama is extra unless the agency’s package includes it, and prices change with the day and how many share a room.

When is the Canyon Route open in 2026?

Tours started on 2 October 2026 and run through October and November, to 30 November. Courses B and D run daily. JTB lists Courses A and C on Wednesdays and Thursdays in October. About 2,700 places were put on sale for the whole season, from 23 July.

Who is not allowed on the Canyon Route?

Children under 11, anyone who cannot get on and off vehicles and climb stairs unaided, and anyone using a stick, walking aid or wheelchair. Pregnant women, people prone to motion sickness and people with a severe fear of enclosed spaces or heights are asked not to join. You wear a helmet throughout and carry only a small backpack.

Can foreign visitors book the Canyon Route?

Only through Japanese travel agencies, which sell the tours. As of 25 October 2026 no English-language package was listed, and the official site describes the route without a booking route. Ask JTB, Nippon Travel Agency, Hankyu Travel or Kinki Nippon Tourist, and check that the guide speaks your language before paying.

What is planned for the Canyon Route in 2027?

Nothing has been announced. The official site and JTB give no 2027 dates, prices or capacity as of 25 October 2026. The route starts at Keyakidaira, so it can only run when the gorge railway does: the railway’s 2026 season began on 20 April but reached Keyakidaira only on 1 October.

Where to stay

The night before, or the night after

Courses A and D put a night in Unazuki Onsen, beside the torokko station. A package will name the hotel, but you can also book a ryokan yourself for the nights around it.

Finishing at Kurobe Dam, or starting from the Nagano side (Course C)? These two sit at the Alpine Route ends.
