In brief

Nihonkai Sakana Machi (日本海さかな街) in Wakaba-chō is a seafood market of nearly 60 shops, billed as the largest on the Sea of Japan side. Entry is free. Hours are about 10:00–17:30 (18:00 in July, August, November and December), with irregular closed days, often Wednesdays. From Tsuruga Station take the Gurutto Tsuruga Shopping Route bus, ¥200, first bus 9:50. Allow 1–1.5 hours.

Lunch between two trains

The hall sells whole and filleted fish from Tsuruga Port, processed seafood, sweets and Fukui and Wakasa souvenirs, and about 17 restaurants sit alongside the fish counters. Many shops hand out free samples of squid and seaweed, and some stalls open oysters to order. Go before 11:00 if you dislike crowds: one visitor guide notes it fills from about 11 and suggests arriving near 9.

It is the one place in Tsuruga that is built for a quick, good meal, which is why it suits a gap between trains. The catch is the bus: it runs roughly hourly and the market has irregular closed days, so look at the timetable and the calendar before you commit. See changing trains at Tsuruga for the connection and the Tsuruga town guide for what else fits.

Shops often named in guides: Kani Kuitei Masuyone (かに喰亭ますよね) for crab bowls, set meals and crab ramen, listed 10:30–17:00 (to 17:30 at weekends and holidays); Sen'endon Hiroshi (鮮宴丼ひろし) for its Hiroshi-don, 10:00–17:00; Ajishi (味世司), where you build a bowl from about 100 ingredients; and Wakasa-tei (若狭亭), which adds sauce katsudon and Echizen soba. Hours and days are as listed in a travel guide and can change, so check on the day.

An older visitor report put simple bowls at about ¥1,000 and oysters shucked on the spot at ¥600–800; treat both as rough guides and check current prices.

Echizen crab season越前ガニ・セイコガニ

Male crab 6 Nov–20 Mar · female crab to 31 Dec

The season for Echizen male crab opens on 6 November every year and runs to 20 March; the smaller female seiko-gani can be fished only until 31 December. From the opening day, boiled crab fills the shelves and crab bowls appear on menus. Prices move with each day's landings and with size and grade, so ask before you buy.

For scale: Fukui prefecture's 2023 figures put male crab at about ¥10,030 per kg at the dock, so a 600–700 g crab starts around ¥6,000–7,000 before a shop's margin. The snow crab guide covers the season in full and crab ryokan are where to eat it for dinner.

Tips for the market

Irregular closed days and the last-bus time are the two things to check.

  1. 01
Check the closed day. The market closes on irregular days, often Wednesdays. The calendar is on sakanamachi.info and the phone is 0770-24-3800.
  2. 02
Aim for opening time. Restaurants open at 10:00 and the hall is quieter before 11:00. The 9:50 bus from the station gets you there for the opening.
  3. 03
Eat before you shop. Buy chilled fish last, so it spends less time in your bag, and ask for ice if you have a train to catch.
  4. 04
Bring cash and a bag. Smaller counters may not take cards, and a cool bag is useful for crab.
  5. 05
Crab opens 6 November. Before that date the male Echizen crab is not in season, so ask which crab is on sale.
