Planned dates for 2026-27; April and May skiing is at Charmant Hiuchi only.

In brief

Itoigawa has two ski areas, both reached from Itoigawa Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen (the Hakutaka, 2h 02m to 2h 21m from Tokyo). Itoigawa Seaside Valley (糸魚川シーサイドバレースキー場) is the gentle one, with 5 lifts, a 4 km longest run and views of the Sea of Japan from the summit. Charmant Hiuchi (シャルマン火打スキー場) is the powder hill: about 16 courses, 3 lifts and 65% of the area left ungroomed. Both are planned to open on 18 December 2026; Seaside Valley closes on 22 March and Charmant Hiuchi keeps going until 5 May. An adult day ticket is ¥5,000 at both.

Two hills, one station

These are small, local mountains rather than big resorts, and that is the appeal. The snow comes straight off the Sea of Japan, the slopes are quiet on weekdays, and the town below has onsen ryokan, a jade coast and a good run of izakaya. A day or two on snow slots neatly into a night in Itoigawa.

Which one? Beginners, children and anyone who wants long, easy cruising with a sea view should start at Seaside Valley. Confident skiers and snowboarders who want ungroomed snow in January and February, or spring skiing into May, should go to Charmant Hiuchi. If you can do only one and you are not sure, pick Seaside Valley: it has more lifts, and its bus and car access is easier.

Getting there

Itoigawa Station, then a hire car or a bus

The Shinkansen stops at Itoigawa; both hills are a short drive inland.

Easiest
車

By car

Itoigawa Station · about 25 to 30 minutes

Hire a car at Itoigawa Station (JR Eki Rent-a-Car has a counter in the Hisui Ōkoku-kan building by the station; details in our Itoigawa access guide). Seaside Valley is about 20 minutes from Itoigawa IC on the Hokuriku Expressway, and Charmant Hiuchi about 30 minutes from Nō IC. Each has free parking for about 1,000 cars.

Winter tyres are needed. Ask for them when you book the hire car, and expect snow on the access roads.

By train and bus

Tokyo to Itoigawa · 2h 02m to 2h 21m

Only the Hakutaka stops at Itoigawa, roughly hourly; Kagayaki trains pass through. The last leg is by private railway, bus or taxi, and no pass covers it.

To Seaside Valley: a bus takes about 35 minutes from Itoigawa Station, or about 20 minutes from Negi Station on the JR Ōito Line. The bus timetable is not published in advance, so confirm it and the operating days with the resort (025-558-2244) before you plan around it. A taxi from Itoigawa Station takes about 25 to 30 minutes.

To Charmant Hiuchi: take the Echigo Tokimeki Railway (Nihonkai-Hisui Line) from Itoigawa to Nō Station (¥400 each way), then a bus of about 35 minutes. The bus runs on Saturdays, Sundays and winter and spring holidays only, with one round trip a day; ask the resort (025-568-2244) for the times.

Passes: the Hokuriku Arch Pass (¥35,000, 7 days) and the JR Pass cover the Shinkansen to Itoigawa. The JR East Pass stops one station short at Jōetsu-Myōkō.

Planned 18 December 2026 to 22 March 2027. Adult day ticket ¥5,000.

Itoigawa Seaside Valley糸魚川シーサイドバレースキー場

Yamaguchi, Itoigawa · about 20 min from Itoigawa IC · free parking

Five lifts climb from 240 m to a top at 740 m, about 500 m of vertical, over mostly beginner and intermediate runs. The longest run is 4 km, the steepest pitch is 20°, and one run drops toward the sea for stronger skiers. From the summit you see the mountain ranges and, in winter, the Sea of Japan. Snowboards and snow scooters are allowed on every run. Skiing is 8:30 to 16:30, with no night skiing.

Families do well here: there is a children's sledding slope, and on Sundays 20 December, 17 January, 21 February and 21 March junior high school children and under pay just ¥600 for the lift ticket.

Beside the slope stands White Cliff (塩の道温泉 ホワイトクリフ), an onsen with a sodium-bicarbonate spring at 37.5°C. Day entry is ¥510 for adults and ¥310 for children, 10:00 to 21:00 (last entry 20:00). The Bokka Chaya (歩荷茶屋) tea house serves food and has rooms for overnight stays.

Sixteen or so courses spread over about 94 hectares, from a base at 501 m to a top at 1,009 m, served by only 3 lifts. About 65% of the area is left ungroomed, so this is a mountain for powder in January and February and for skiers and snowboarders who are happy off the groomed lines. The split is about 20% easy, 45% intermediate and 35% advanced, the steepest pitch is 37° and the longest run is 1,623 m. Snowboards are allowed everywhere and there is a board park.

The season is the other draw: it is planned to run to 5 May 2027, which makes this one of the longest in Hokuriku, with spring skiing and a view of the Sea of Japan. Skiing is 8:30 to 16:30 and there is no night skiing. Last season the slope ran on weekends, public holidays and school holidays only, so check the operating calendar before you plan a weekday.

Beginners are better at Seaside Valley. The powder area, the off-piste courses and most of the mountain are rated intermediate to advanced, and with few lifts you want to be comfortable on everything you ride.

There is a snow park and a kids' room (weekends, holidays and school breaks, 9:00 to 16:00, a guardian must stay), with a nappy-changing space. Mobile signal can be patchy at the base, so do not rely on a phone-only ticket.

Where to stay

In Itoigawa, or in an onsen ryokan

Seven stays: three onsen and coastal inns, four in town. Check rates shows tonight's price for your dates.

After the lifts

Itoigawa is a proper town, so the evening is easy.

  1. 01
Onsen. Soak after the lifts. White Cliff sits beside the Seaside Valley slope (day entry ¥510), and Sasakura Onsen Ryūun-sō and Maseguchi Onsen Gongenso in the stay list above are built around their baths. Our onsen guide covers the water.
  2. 02
Winter food. Monkfish (ankō) hotpot is on ryokan menus in winter, and last season the restaurant at the top of Charmant Hiuchi served a crab and salmon-roe rice bowl made with Nō seafood. In town try Itoigawa black yakisoba and the local sake: see the food and sake guide.
  3. 03
The old town. The streets behind the station have sake breweries and an evening izakaya scene. See the downtown guide.
  4. 04
Jade and the coast. Itoigawa is famous for jade (hisui) and its geopark. Our jade coast and geopark guides cover the sights for a non-ski day.
  5. 05
More snow next door. Jōetsu-Myōkō is 13 minutes east on the Hakutaka, and the Myōkō resorts are bigger: see Myōkō ski and Lotte Arai.
FAQ

Itoigawa ski questions, answered

When do the Itoigawa ski areas open for 2026-27?

Both are planned to open on Friday 18 December 2026. Itoigawa Seaside Valley is planned to close on Monday 22 March 2027, and Charmant Hiuchi is planned to keep skiing until Wednesday 5 May 2027. Both run from 8:30 to 16:30 with no night skiing, and dates can move with the snow.

How much is a lift ticket at Seaside Valley and Charmant Hiuchi?

An adult day ticket is listed at ¥5,000 at both. Seaside Valley lists seniors (60 and over) at ¥4,000 and children at ¥3,000; Charmant Hiuchi lists seniors at ¥4,000 and children at ¥3,500. Rental is ¥4,500 for an adult ski or snowboard set at Seaside Valley and ¥4,800 at Charmant Hiuchi. Prices can change in season.

Which Itoigawa ski area is better for beginners, and which for powder?

Start at Itoigawa Seaside Valley: it has 5 lifts, mostly beginner and intermediate runs, a longest run of 4 km and a children's sledding slope. Charmant Hiuchi is for confident skiers and snowboarders: about 65% of the area is left ungroomed, with 3 lifts and a steepest pitch of 37 degrees, and the powder is best in January and February.

Can I get to the Itoigawa ski areas without a car?

Partly. Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Itoigawa Station. A bus to Seaside Valley takes about 35 minutes from Itoigawa Station or about 20 minutes from Negi Station, but its timetable is not published in advance, so confirm it with the resort. For Charmant Hiuchi, take the Echigo Tokimeki Railway to Nō Station (¥400 each way) and then a 35-minute bus that runs on Saturdays, Sundays and winter and spring holidays only, with one round trip a day. A hire car from Itoigawa Station is the easier plan, at about 25 to 30 minutes to either hill.

Is there night skiing in Itoigawa?

No. Neither Itoigawa Seaside Valley nor Charmant Hiuchi runs night skiing. Lifts run from 8:30 to 16:30.

Does the Hokuriku Arch Pass or JR Pass cover the trip?

Both cover the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Itoigawa (the Hakutaka stops here, 2h 02m to 2h 21m from Tokyo). The JR East Pass stops one station short at Jōetsu-Myōkō. No pass covers the Echigo Tokimeki Railway, the ski buses or a taxi, so the last leg is paid separately.

Can I ski Itoigawa as a day trip from Tokyo?

It is possible but long: the Hakutaka takes 2h 02m to 2h 21m each way, plus 25 to 30 minutes by car, which leaves a short day on snow. A night in Itoigawa town or in an onsen ryokan gives you a full day and a hot bath at the end of it.
