In brief

JAM Fukui Katsuyama Mountain Resort (formerly Ski Jam Katsuyama, スキージャム勝山) is the largest ski area in the Kansai-Hokuriku belt: 12 courses and 3 tree zones, a longest run of 5,800 m and 710 m of vertical. The season is planned for 19 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. An adult day ticket is ¥4,500 to ¥6,500 by date. The base is Fukui, 2h 50m from Tokyo on the Shinkansen, then the Echizen Railway and a free shuttle, or about 40 minutes by car.

Why Katsuyama

The resort was renamed on 1 April 2026, so older guides and booking pages may still say Ski Jam Katsuyama. The mountain is the same: a long, varied hill above the Katsuyama basin in the east of Fukui, with a 30/40/30 split of easy, intermediate and advanced courses, a Kids Park, and a Snow Park that opens in March. There is no night skiing, so a ski day runs from 8:30 to 16:30.

It suits a trip that mixes snow with the rest of Fukui. The Echizen Railway runs from Fukui city to Katsuyama past Eihei-ji, and the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum is on the same shuttle line, so a bad-weather day has somewhere to go. Below: how to get there by train and shuttle or by car, the lift ticket price for every date, the mountain, and where to stay.

Both start at Fukui, on the Hokuriku Shinkansen.

Direct ski buses run in season from Osaka, Nagoya and Fukui Station; the resort posts the timetables.

Where to stay

Hotels at Katsuyama and in Fukui city

Ten stays: four at the resort and in Katsuyama, six in Fukui city. Check rates shows tonight's price for your dates.

How to choose: the Tokyu resort hotel is the one stay at the foot of the courses with a large number of guest reviews, and its guests get a shuttle from Fukui Station. The other Katsuyama stays are small and close to the resort or the town. Fukui city, 40 minutes away, has the biggest choice of rooms and sits on the Shinkansen, so it works if you arrive by train and want a city evening, or if you drive.

Eat and off the slopes

After the lifts

Fukui eats well in winter, and the railway to Katsuyama passes two of the prefecture's best day trips.

  1. 01
Echizen oroshi soba. Buckwheat noodles with grated daikon (越前おろしそば), the dish of the prefecture. See Imajō-juku for a soba stop on the Hapi-Line.
  2. 02
Sauce katsu-don. A pork cutlet dipped in sauce over rice (ソースカツ丼), a Fukui lunch that suits a ski day. See the Fukui guide for the local food.
  3. 03
Snow crab. The Echizen crab season opens in November, so a ski trip in January or February can end with crab in Fukui city. See the snow crab guide.
  4. 04
Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. A non-ski day in Katsuyama, on the same shuttle line from Katsuyama Station. Entry is by timed ticket booked online. See the Dinosaur Museum guide.
  5. 05
Heisen-ji Hakusan Shrine. A free moss forest with stone paths in Katsuyama, a short bus from the station. See Heisen-ji.
  6. 06
Eihei-ji. The Zen head temple lies on the same Echizen Railway line, so it fits the day you travel in or out. See Eihei-ji or the Eihei-ji and dinosaurs day.
