In brief

The Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum (福井県立恐竜博物館) is in Katsuyama, 54 minutes from Fukui by Echizen Railway plus a 12–14 minute bus. Entry is by timed ticket booked online: ¥1,000 for adults, or ¥1,800 with the sauropod special exhibition (to 3 November 2026). It opens 9:00–17:00 and closes on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday. Allow 2–3 hours. Neither the JR Pass nor the Arch Pass covers the Echizen Railway; the Hokuriku Area Pass does.

Inside

What you are buying a ticket for

The museum reopened on 14 July 2023 after a renovation and an extension. By Fukui’s own count, about 80% of the dinosaur fossils found in Japan come from the prefecture.

The dome and the park恐竜博物館・かつやま恐竜の森

Katsuyama Dinosaur Forest · 12–14 min by bus from Katsuyama Station

The museum sits inside the Katsuyama Dinosaur Forest (かつやま恐竜の森), a hillside park with free parking. The building is a silver dome with a pyramid beside it, and a dinosaur-headed statue in a lab coat sits reading on a bench in front.

The park also has a pay-per-go digging playground for children from 4 (about ¥600 for children and ¥1,150 for adults, to 23 November; confirm before you go).

Permanent exhibition · allow 2–3 hours

The hall holds 51 skeletons among more than a thousand specimens, shown across several levels around a central atrium. English signage and an audio guide app are available.

Entry windows are one hour long but last as long as you want to stay. Re-entry is allowed on the same date, which helps with lunch.

Fukui’s own dinosaursフクイラプトル

Kitadani Formation, Katsuyama

The quarry at Kitadani, just outside Katsuyama, gave Japan Fukuiraptor, Fukuisaurus, Fukuititan, Koshisaurus and Fukuivenator. An animatronic Fukuiraptor roars inside the museum.

The 2026 special exhibition, “Sauropods” (竜脚類), runs 10 July to 3 November. It centres on a 19 m skeleton of the Chinese sauropod Xinjiangtitan and brings every Japanese sauropod site together for the first time.

Fossil lab化石研究体験

Inside the museum · about 120 minutes

Three of four menus: rebuild a full-size T. rex skull (from 24 April to 10 November 2026 this replaces the fossil-dig menu), clean a dinosaur tooth out of rock with real tools, and examine fossils on CT images. You can take the cast and the stone around it home.

Elementary school age and up; younger children cannot enter. Groups of 12. Sessions run at 9:20, 10:30, 12:50 and 14:00 on weekdays, with extra slots on weekends and holidays. It is dusty, and the room can feel cold in spring and autumn.

Field Station野外恐竜博物館

Kitadani quarry · bus from the museum · 17 Apr – 3 Nov 2026

A guided bus tour to Japan’s biggest dinosaur dig, open since 2014 and partly a National Natural Monument since 2017. You see the working quarry, a display of finds, and split fossil-bearing rock yourself. Wear work gloves (on sale on site), and bring a drink and clothes that can get dusty.

Weekday buses leave at 11:00 and 13:30; weekends, holidays and 17–31 August add 10:00 and 14:30. Check in 30 minutes before. The tour is closed on 28 October, bad weather can cancel it, and the guiding is mainly in Japanese.

Getting there

From Fukui, Kanazawa, Kyoto and Tokyo

The museum is at the end of the Echizen Railway Katsuyama-Eiheiji Line. Every route goes through Fukui Station.

01

Echizen Railway to Katsuyamaえちぜん鉄道 勝山永平寺線

Fukui · 54 min · ¥820

A short local train up the Kuzuryū valley. At Katsuyama Station the museum bus waits outside, timed to the trains: a typical weekday has a bus about every 30 minutes, 12–14 minutes to the museum for ¥300. The first runs at 8:03 (not Sundays or holidays); the last bus back leaves the museum at 17:13 and connects with the 17:49 train.

The Dinosaur set ticket (¥1,700 adult, ¥900 child) is an Echizen Railway day pass plus Katsuyama buses, valid on museum open days and sold at staffed station windows. Rail and bus separately cost ¥2,240 return, so it saves ¥540.

Fukui Station福井駅 恐竜広場

Hokuriku Shinkansen · West Exit

A Fukuiraptor skeleton stands inside the station, and moving robot dinosaurs fill the plaza outside the West Exit. Both are free and worth five minutes before you change to the Echizen Railway. The Echizen Railway station sits beside the JR one, so the change takes a few minutes.

To skip the rail change, the JR West WOW RIDE XR bus runs from the station direct to the museum with AR images on the windows (¥3,400 weekdays, ¥3,400–¥3,900 weekends; book on Happy Bus). It costs about three times the train.

Practical tips

Before you go

What visitors tend to learn the hard way.

  1. 01
Book the museum before the trains. Pick the date and entry window first, then buy rail tickets. Busy days are Golden Week, Obon in mid-August, weekends and school holidays.
  2. 02
Check the Wednesday rule. 28 October 2026 is a closed Wednesday, and so are 11 and 25 November. The calendar also shows occasional maintenance closures.
  3. 03
The special exhibition ends 3 November. It adds ¥800 to the entry price. The Field Station tours also end on 3 November, so after that you get the hall and the lab only.
  4. 04
Use the Dinosaur set ticket. Buy it at an Echizen Railway station window; it also covers the Katsuyama buses. Museum admission is separate.
  5. 05
Take work gloves for the Field Station. They are sold on site. Bring a drink and clothes that can get dusty.
  6. 06
Eat in Fukui first. The museum has a restaurant, but Fukui’s sauce katsudon and oroshi soba are worth planning around: see Fukui food.
FAQ

Dinosaur Museum questions, answered

Do I need to book the Fukui Dinosaur Museum in advance?

Yes, in practice. Admission is by timed ticket: you buy a date and a one-hour entry window online, and tickets go on sale 60 days ahead. The museum takes no phone bookings. Same-day tickets are sold at the museum machines only if slots remain, so on weekends, holidays, Golden Week and in summer buy first and plan the trains second.

How much is the Fukui Dinosaur Museum in 2026?

¥1,000 for adults, ¥800 for high school and university students, ¥500 for elementary and junior high pupils and visitors aged 70+, and free for pre-school children. Until 3 November 2026 the sauropod special exhibition adds ¥800 (¥1,800 combined). The Field Station quarry tour is ¥1,300 and the 2-hour fossil lab is ¥1,200 on top of entry.

How do I get from Fukui Station to the Dinosaur Museum?

Take the Echizen Railway Katsuyama-Eiheiji Line to Katsuyama (54 minutes, ¥820), then the museum bus (12–14 minutes, ¥300). Allow about 1h 15m to 1h 30m in all. The Echizen Railway Dinosaur set ticket (¥1,700) covers the train and Katsuyama buses for the day. A direct XR bus, WOW RIDE, runs from Fukui Station for ¥3,400 to ¥3,900 one way.

Is the Fukui Dinosaur Museum open on Wednesdays?

Usually yes, except the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month (the next day if it is a holiday). By that rule the museum is closed on 28 October, 11 and 25 November and 9 and 23 December 2026. It also closes on 31 December and 1 January. In the summer holidays it opens daily. Check the museum calendar before you book.

Can you dig for fossils at the Fukui Dinosaur Museum?

Two ways. The Field Station is a guided bus tour from the museum to the real Kitadani quarry, where you split rock for fossils (¥1,300, about 2 hours, 17 April to 3 November 2026). The fossil lab (¥2,200 with entry) is an indoor workshop for elementary school age and up. Both are booked online by 23:59 the day before.

Does the JR Pass or Hokuriku Arch Pass cover the Echizen Railway?

No. Neither the Japan Rail Pass nor the Hokuriku Arch Pass covers the Echizen Railway or the Katsuyama buses. The JR West Hokuriku Area Pass (¥7,000, 4 days) does include the Echizen Railway from Fukui to Katsuyama.
