Echizen-Ōno越前大野

The keep was rebuilt in 1968 on the original rough-stone walls. From about October to April, on windless mornings after a humid day, cloud fills the basin and only the castle hill shows above it, from dawn to about 9:00. November is the best month, but only 9–20 mornings a season are confirmed.

A grid of north–south streets and a street of temples. The Shichiken morning market runs from the spring equinox to 31 December, about 07:00–11:00, with farmers' vegetables, pickles and, in autumn, Kamishō taro; it returned to Shichiken-dōri on 20 September 2026.

Oshōzu, the lord's spring, is one of Japan's Top 100 Waters (free). Honganshōzu is a Natural Monument for its landlocked sticklebacks, with a study centre beside it (¥400, closed Mondays).

In August 2023 the highlands became Japan's fourth Dark Sky Place and Asia's first Urban Night Sky Place; the Environment Ministry ranked Ōno's sky the most beautiful in Japan in 2005. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye.

The Fukui Prefectural Nature Conservation Centre runs free stargazing with its 80 cm telescope every Saturday (19:00–21:00 in winter, 19:30–21:30 in summer; not in January or February). The SORA to DAICHI campsite, opened July 2025, is inside the reserve and open all year. Car or taxi only.

The reservoir behind a 128 m rockfill dam is one of Japan's Top 100 autumn-colour spots, best from late October to early November. The Hakogase suspension bridge, nicknamed the bridge of dreams, was built as a prototype for the Seto Ōhashi.

GNOMES runs 2-hour kayak tours on the lake from late April to early November (¥6,500 adult; 0779-67-1117).

The Izumi district's rocks span 300 million years. Ga-Ōno, 3 minutes from Kuzuryūko station, shows Japan's oldest tyrannosauroid tooth (¥400, closed Mondays). At HOROSSA! you split Jurassic rock with a hammer and keep the ammonites you find: four one-hour sessions a day, booking recommended (0779-78-2070).
