In brief

Echizen Washi no Sato (越前和紙の里) is a cluster of three facilities in the Imadate district of Echizen city, where washi has been made for about 1,500 years. At Papyrus House you make your own sheet or card from ¥700 (entry free, 20–40 minutes); the Udatsu Paper and Craft Museum and the Paper and Culture Museum share a ¥300 ticket. Everything is closed on Tuesdays. From Echizen-Takefu Station it is about 10 minutes by taxi; the bus from Takefu takes 30 minutes and runs rarely.

What you see

Four things in the village

The village is small and on one road. Papermaking is the point; the museums and the shrine fill in the story.

01

Papyrus Houseパピルス館

Hands-on · 20–40 minutes

The experience hall lets you make washi yourself: scoop the pulp, shake the screen and press in flowers or dyes. Prices are per piece: a coloured card ¥700, two or four postcards ¥700–1,100, six coasters ¥1,100, ten business cards ¥1,300, a large sheet ¥2,500.

Up to 30 people can work at once and a session takes 20–40 minutes. With two days’ notice there are advanced options: water-drop pattern paper ¥2,000, fans ¥1,400–2,300, an LED lantern kit ¥3,800.

Joint ticket ¥300

The Udatsu hall is an old papermaker’s house, with the firewalls that give it its name, where traditional papermakers work with the old tools from start to finish. It is the one to see if you only do one thing besides Papyrus House.

The Paper and Culture Museum next door has films, panels and samples on the history and uses of Echizen washi, with special exhibitions upstairs. One ¥300 ticket covers both; high school students and under are free.

Okamoto-Ōtaki Shrine岡太神社・大瀧神社

About 10 minutes’ walk south-east

The shrine honours Kawakami Gozen (川上御前), the goddess said to have taught the villagers to make paper, which makes it a shrine for papermakers. The buildings date from 1843, and the main hall and worship hall are Important Cultural Properties (1984), famed for one of the most complicated roofs in Japan.

It is a walk of about 10 minutes from the village, or 15 minutes by taxi from Echizen-Takefu Station.

Imadate · lanes and streams

The Imadate district, known as the Goka (五箇) villages, supplies high-grade paper, including for certificates and art. The craft depends on clean running water, and a stream runs beside the lane. Imadate has other papermaking workshops; ask at Papyrus House which of them take visitors.

Guides list a washi shop in Papyrus House, which is the easy place to buy paper or a card you did not make yourself.

Getting there

From Echizen-Takefu and from Takefu

A taxi from the Shinkansen station is the practical way; the bus is slow and rare.

Practical tips

Before you go

What decides whether the visit works.

  1. 01
Do not come on a Tuesday. All three facilities are shut. New Year is closed as well.
  2. 02
Be at Papyrus House by 15:30 for the last experience booking; the hall closes at 16:00. Phone ahead for groups: 0778-42-1363.
  3. 03
Ask about drying. Handmade paper has to dry, so ask whether your sheet can go home the same day before you plan a train.
  4. 04
Book the return taxi on arrival, or you may wait. The bus back is rare, and I could not confirm a taxi rank in the village.
  5. 05
Expect wet hands and sleeves. Papermaking is done over a vat of water, so wear something you do not mind splashing.
  6. 06
Pair it with the knife village. Both are 10 minutes from the station; one taxi round trip is cheaper than two.
