In brief

Maruoka Castle (丸岡城) in Sakai, Fukui, is one of the 12 castles in Japan that still have their original keep and the only one in Hokuriku. Entry is ¥450 (¥150 for elementary and junior high pupils), 8:30 to 17:00, and includes the Ippitsu Keijō letter museum. The keep is under a major repair until about November 2027 and is open only in part on set dates: it can be entered until 8 November 2026, and nothing is announced after that. From Awara-Onsen Station it is about 20 minutes by Keifuku bus. Allow 45 to 60 minutes.

What you see

The keep, the stone roof, the letter and the sakura

The site is small. The keep and the museum take about an hour; the cherry trees are the reason to come in April.

01

The keep天守

Honmaru · two storeys outside, three inside

The keep (天守) is a small watchtower-style building on a rough stone base, built in 1576 by Shibata Katsutoyo, nephew of Shibata Katsuie, the lord of Echizen. Later dating puts the keep in the early Edo period, so the claim that it is the oldest of the twelve is debated. It is a National Important Cultural Property.

It collapsed in the 1948 Fukui earthquake and was rebuilt from its own timbers and stones in 1955. The roof is covered in stone tiles (石瓦), cut from shakudani stone, which is why the building looks grey and heavy against the snow.

The repair works修理

Honmaru · scaffold and cover

Sakai City is strengthening the keep against earthquakes and repairing its roof, walls and third-floor balustrade. During the works the keep can carry scaffolding and a protective sheet, and a full-size printed image of the keep has hung on it. See the repair dates below.

Parts of the honmaru can be fenced off, and the temporary opening dates have changed month by month, so look at the castle’s news page before you go.

The shortest-letter museum日本一短い手紙の館

Beside the castle · included in the ticket

The museum is named after a note a Maruoka samurai, Honda Shigetsugu, is said to have sent his family from camp: “Ikkitsu keijō, hi no yōjin, Osen nakasuna, uma koyase” (一筆啓上 火の用心 お仙泣かすな 馬肥やせ), “Writing to tell you: mind the fire, don’t make Osen cry, feed the horse.” Osen is usually explained as his small son’s childhood name.

Entry to the museum is in the castle ticket; I could not confirm its own opening hours or what is on show, so treat it as a bonus rather than the reason to come.

Cherry blossom桜

Around the keep · early to mid April

About 400 Somei-yoshino cherry trees ring the castle mound, and Maruoka is one of Japan’s Top 100 cherry blossom spots. The Maruoka Castle Sakura Festival runs in April, usually with lanterns and evening lighting.

With the repair cover on the keep, the 2027 blossom may look different from the photograph: the trees will be there, the building may not be fully visible. Check the festival dates in March.

Getting there

From Awara-Onsen and from Fukui

Maruoka is north of Fukui city, in Sakai. The Shinkansen to Awara-Onsen plus a bus is the practical route.

RouteDetailsTimeFare
Awara-Onsen Station → castleKeifuku bus 86 (Awara–Maruoka–Eiheiji Line) to Maruoka-jō. On Sundays and holidays (timetable from 1 April 2026) it leaves Awara-Onsen at 9:45, 10:25, 11:25, 12:30, 13:25 and 14:25. Back from Maruoka-jō: 11:54, 12:54, 13:54 and 14:54. The Shinkansen to Awara-Onsen is covered by the JR Pass and the Arch Pass; the Keifuku buses and the Hapi-Line between Fukui and Maruoka are not. From Tokyo, Awara-Onsen is 2h 51m on the Kagayaki (not every train stops): see getting to Fukui.

Practical tips

Before you go

What I would check first, and what is easy to miss.

  1. 01
Phone before you travel for the keep. It is open only on set dates during the repair. The grounds, the museum and the trees do not depend on it.
  2. 02
Time the buses, not the castle. The Sunday route 86 buses return from Maruoka-jō hourly from 11:54 to 14:54, with a later pair for Kanazu; leave by 14:54 if you want Awara-Onsen.
  3. 03
Toilets are in the Maruoka Castle Machiyori Market beside the castle, not inside the keep.
  4. 04
Expect steep stairs and shoes off if the keep is open: original keeps are built for defence, not comfort.
  5. 05
Blossom time is busy. Early to mid April weekends fill the 40-car castle lot; the 140-space lot at the Hyakuhitsu Keishō-kan is the overflow.
  6. 06
Pair it with Eiheiji. The 2-day Keifuku pass covers both and Tōjinbō, but the timetable is what limits you.
FAQ

Maruoka Castle questions, answered

How much is Maruoka Castle and is the keep open?

Entry is ¥450 for adults and ¥150 for elementary and junior high pupils, 8:30 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:30, and it includes the Ippitsu Keijō letter museum. The keep is under a major repair until about November 2027. It is open in part from 19 September to 8 November 2026; nothing is announced after that, so call 0776-66-0303 first.

How do I get from Awara-Onsen Station to Maruoka Castle?

Take Keifuku bus 86 to Maruoka-jō, about 20 minutes. On Sundays and holidays it leaves Awara-Onsen at 9:45, 10:25, 11:25, 12:30, 13:25 and 14:25. A taxi takes about the same time and is the fallback on days with fewer buses.

When is the cherry blossom at Maruoka Castle?

Early to mid April. About 400 Somei-yoshino trees circle the castle and the Maruoka Castle Sakura Festival runs in April with evening lighting. The keep may be covered by repair works in 2027.

What is the shortest letter museum at Maruoka?

The Ippitsu Keijō “Nihon-ichi Mijikai Tegami” museum (日本一短い手紙の館) is named after a four-phrase note attributed to the Maruoka samurai Honda Shigetsugu: “Ikkitsu keijō, hi no yōjin, Osen nakasuna, uma koyase.” Entry is included in the castle ticket.

Is Maruoka Castle original?

The keep is original in its timbers and stones, but it fell in the 1948 Fukui earthquake and was rebuilt in 1955 from the same materials. It is one of the 12 surviving original keeps in Japan and the only one in Hokuriku.

How long do you need at Maruoka Castle?

About 45 to 60 minutes for the keep and the museum, longer in blossom season. The bus timetable is the limit, so check the return before you go up.
