In brief

If a photo shows a castle above cloud at dawn, it is Echizen Ōno: the city markets it as 天空の城, the castle in the sky. Maruoka, north of Fukui city, is the older-looking keep and one of the twelve that survive from the Edo period or earlier. Neither is on the Wakasa coast; both are day trips from Fukui.

Echizen Ōno Castle越前大野城

JR Kuzuryū Line to Echizen-Ono (56 min, ¥760; part bus in 2026) · Ōno town guide

Built in 1575–76 by Kanamori Nagachika, a general of Oda Nobunaga, on Kameyama hill in the middle of the Ōno basin. The keep is a 1968 reconstruction and museum; the stone walls are original.

For the sea of clouds, climb the Kuwakake path to the Inuyama Castle ruins (324 m, about 20 minutes) before dawn, October to April, best in November. The keep is closed December to March, so you watch from outside.

Maruoka Castle丸岡城

Keifuku bus 86 from Awara-Onsen, 18 min

Built in 1576 by Shibata Katsutoyo. One of Japan's 12 original keeps and the only one in Hokuriku, roofed with Shakudani stone tiles. The grounds hold the "Japan's shortest letter" museum, and about 400 cherry trees make it one of Japan's top 100 sakura spots (April).

Under major repair from March 2026 to November 2027. Access to the keep varies; check before you go.

2026 disruption: since the August rain, Kuzuryū Line trains run only as far as Miyama (4 a day) with a JR bus on to Ōno, about 1h 08m; JR expects to reopen from October at the earliest. Normally trains run roughly every 1.5–2 hours; the Arch Pass and JR Pass cover the line and the replacement bus, Keifuku buses are not covered. Before you go

Things first-time visitors usually wish they'd known.

Stay in Ōno for the clouds. No train or bus from Fukui arrives before dawn. Book a night in Ōno and check the local cloud forecasts.

Go after rain. The cloud sea needs high humidity the day before, a clear cold night and little wind.

Bring a head torch. The Inuyama path is narrow and steep in places, and frost is common from November. Park at the shopping centres, not the side road.

Pair Maruoka with Eiheiji. Keifuku bus 86 runs Awara-Onsen, Maruoka and Eiheiji in one line.
