Echizen craft villages越前・鯖江のものづくり

Paper has been made in the Goka villages here for about 1,500 years. Three buildings share one street. At Papyrus House you make your own sheet in 20–40 minutes: coloured card ¥700, postcards ¥700–¥1,100, a large sheet ¥2,500 (09:00–16:00, booking recommended). At the Udatsu Paper and Craft Museum, papermakers work in an old house with udatsu firewalls; the Paper and Culture Museum covers the history.

Echizen blades go back about 700 years. In 1993 a group of smiths opened this shared workshop, now home to more than ten makers. Entry is free: watch forging, grinding and sharpening from the gallery, then buy tax-free in the shop, which also sharpens and repairs.

The knife-forging class is ¥20,000 for 6 hours from 09:30 (18+), and you take home your own kitchen knife; sharpening classes are ¥12,000. Book at least a week ahead at tkvstore.net or 0778-27-7120.

The hall for Echizen lacquer, made in the Kawada district for 1,500 years: the process from turning to decoration, a 4 m lacquered festival float and craftsmen working in the annex (10:00–16:00). The shop sells over 1,000 pieces at makers' prices, and Café WanWan serves lunch in lacquerware.

One-hour workshops: painting ¥2,200, chinkin gold inlay ¥2,500, fuki-urushi wipe lacquering ¥3,300. Minimum two people; book 2–3 days ahead on 0778-65-2727.

Sabae makes 95% of Japan's spectacle frames, an industry that began over a century ago as winter work for farmers. The museum shows the machines and history; the shop downstairs stocks frames from dozens of Sabae makers.

Make an acetate keyring for ¥2,000 (about an hour), or spend 5–7 hours cutting and polishing your own frame from ¥28,000, lenses extra (booking essential). Tel. 0778-42-8311.

Echizen ware is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. The village has potters' studios, the Fukui Prefectural Ceramics Museum, the Echizen Old Kiln Museum in a restored merchant house (tea from ¥500) and a park with a Japanese garden.

Common ticket ¥800. Wheel throwing ¥3,500 (30 min), hand-building ¥1,500, painting from ¥800. The Echizen Autumn Pottery Festival fills the park on 3–4 October 2026 (free). In late autumn, about 5,000 visitor-made pottery lanterns have lit the garden on weekend evenings; 2026–27 dates are not yet out.
