In brief

Takefu Knife Village (タケフナイフビレッジ) in Echizen city is a shared workshop and shop for the blade smiths of Echizen uchihamono, a forging tradition about 700 years old. Watching the smiths work is free, 9:00 to 17:00 on irregular open days, and the shop sells tax-free to visitors. The one class open to individuals, a 6-hour double-edged kitchen knife class, costs ¥20,000 and must be booked a week ahead. From Echizen-Takefu Station it is about 10 minutes by taxi; there is no bus from the station.

What you see

Three things to do

It is a working factory with a visitor deck, not a museum. What you see depends on who is in.

01

The open workshop工房見学

Viewing deck · free

Smiths from the member workshops forge, grind and sharpen blades while you watch from the deck. Echizen uchihamono is said to go back about 700 years, to a Kyoto swordsmith, Chiyozuru Kuniyasu, who settled in what is now Echizen and made sickles for local farmers.

The village opened in April 1993 as a shared workshop of local smiths. Fewer smiths work at weekends, so a weekday visit shows more.

Same building · tax-free for visitors

The shop sells kitchen knives, scissors and other blades from the member smiths, and visitors can shop tax-free with a passport. There is a sharpening and repair service for knives you bring, and an online shop at tkvstore.net.

Pack a purchased knife in checked luggage if you fly: airlines do not allow blades in the cabin.

The knife class包丁教室

By booking · 6 hours

The class covers nearly every step: heating the steel and hammering it into shape, quenching, grinding, engraving your name and fitting the handle, taught by working smiths. It is ¥20,000, takes 6 hours from 9:30 and is for ages 18 and over; a ¥5,000 deposit is taken at booking. Classes run on irregular dates.

The village site lists the knife class for individuals and says group and school classes are suspended. A short sharpening class is also listed on other sites, and I could not confirm its price, so ask when you book.

Practical tips

Before you go

Small things that decide whether the trip works.

  1. 01
Check the closing days. They are irregular. The village posts a calendar (PDF) on its site and answers the phone on weekdays, 0778-27-7120.
  2. 02
Go on a weekday if you want to see the forges busy; fewer smiths work at weekends.
  3. 03
Book the class a week ahead and expect a ¥5,000 deposit. Ask in the same call whether the date is running, since classes are held irregularly.
  4. 04
Order the return taxi at the same time. Ask the village or your hotel to call it: I could not confirm a taxi rank at the village, and the station is 10 minutes away by car.
  5. 05
Bring your passport for the tax-free price, and plan checked luggage for any blade.
  6. 06
Combine it with Echizen Washi no Sato, also about 10 minutes from the station by taxi, and use one return ride for both.
