Yuzawa Park has not posted 2026-27 dates or prices; both are estimates from last winter.

In brief

Echigo-Yuzawa (越後湯沢) sits among seven small and mid-size ski hills, all a short shuttle, bus or local train from the station and 1h 07m from Tokyo (¥6,900). Ishiuchi Maruyama is the big one, with 23 courses and a gondola; Kandatsu skis until 02:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and pre-holiday nights; Iwappara and Kandatsu weekdays are the cheapest real mountains at ¥5,500. The Hokuriku Arch Pass does not reach this line; the JR East Pass and the JR Pass do.

Seven hills, one station

Yuzawa is a town of small mountains rather than one big resort, which suits a short trip: pick the hill that matches the day, ride the shuttle, and be back at the station for a sake tasting and a train. The pages for the bigger names are separate: GALA Yuzawa has its own Shinkansen platform, and Naeba and Kagura are a bus ride further on. This page covers the seven in between.

Lift tickets have gone up across the valley for 2026-27. Ishiuchi Maruyama rises from ¥6,700 to ¥8,500 (+27%), which makes Kandatsu (¥5,500 on weekdays) and Iwappara (¥5,500) the best value for a full-size day. Yuzawa is a Tokyo day trip that happens to share a Shinkansen network with a Hokuriku trip, not a Hokuriku neighbour; the planning section below explains how the two connect.

Courses and lifts are the resorts' own counts; the gondola and ropeway are counted as lifts. Yuzawa Park has not posted 2026-27 dates or prices, so its row is last winter's. Shuttle timetables for 2026-27 are published by each resort before the season.

Getting there

One Shinkansen, then a shuttle

All seven hills hang off Echigo-Yuzawa Station, so one train gets you to any of them.

電

By Shinkansen

Tokyo to Echigo-Yuzawa · 1h 07m · ¥6,900

Jōetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Echigo-Yuzawa: 1h 07m on the fastest train, 38 trains a day, ¥6,900 from Tokyo (Ueno ¥6,690, Omiya 43 minutes and ¥6,360). The first train leaves Tokyo at 06:08 and the last train back leaves Echigo-Yuzawa at 22:25.

From the station the resorts run free shuttles to NASPA, Yuzawa Kōgen, Ishiuchi (about 10 minutes), Kandatsu (about 7 minutes), Iwappara (about 10 minutes) and Yuzawa Park (about 10 minutes). Ishiuchi is also a short ride on the Jōetsu Line, and Echigo-Nakazato station sits at the foot of Yuzawa Nakazato. The 2026-27 timetables are posted by each resort before the season.

Passes: the JR East Pass (Nagano, Niigata area) and the JR Pass cover the Jōetsu Shinkansen. The Hokuriku Arch Pass does not reach this line. For one ski day from Tokyo, ordinary tickets cost less than any pass.

By car

Yuzawa IC · 3 to 10 minutes to each hill

From central Tokyo it is about 190 km on the Kan-Etsu Expressway, roughly 2h 45m with no traffic, and ski weekends are slower. Kandatsu is 3 minutes from Yuzawa IC with about 2,000 free spaces; Ishiuchi Maruyama is 5 minutes from Shiozawa-Ishiuchi IC (about 1,000 spaces, free on weekdays and ¥1,000 on weekends and holidays); NASPA, Yuzawa Kōgen and Iwappara are about 5 minutes from their interchanges.

Winter tyres are needed. Ask for them when you book the hire car. A car pays off when you want to string two or three hills together or add Naeba and Kagura; for a single hill the shuttle is simpler. Licence rules are in our car-hire notes.

The seven hills

Ishiuchi Maruyama and Kandatsu first

The two largest get the longest entries; the other five are small, quiet and cheap.

01

Ishiuchi Maruyama石打丸山

Ishiuchi station, 3 min on foot · 18 Dec to 4 Apr

The biggest of the seven: 23 courses and 13 lifts including a gondola, on a broad mountain that tops out at 920 m and drops about 664 m to a 256 m base. The longest run is 4 km, and the terrain splits roughly 30% beginner, 40% intermediate and 30% advanced. It is a favourite for groups and families, with a long, gentle run off the gondola.

The station, Ishiuchi on the Jōetsu Line, is a 3-minute walk from the base, and a shuttle from Echigo-Yuzawa takes about 10 minutes. Night skiing runs 16:00 to 20:00 from 26 December to 27 February, then Fridays, Saturdays and holidays in March. The base is low, so the first and last weeks depend on snowfall. The adult day ticket is ¥8,500, up from ¥6,700 last winter.

Kandatsu Snow Resort神立スノーリゾート

Free shuttle from the station, 7 min · 11 Dec to 11 Apr

The closest real mountain to Echigo-Yuzawa Station and the only one in the valley that skis through the night: 18:00 to 02:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and the nights before holidays, from 18 December to 27 March. It has the longest season of the seven, planned for 11 December 2026 to 11 April 2027.

The mountain is compact and a little steep: 16 courses served by 5 lifts, a top of 1,000 m, 540 m of vertical and a longest run of 3,500 m, with the steepest pitch at 45 degrees. The split is about 30% beginner, 40% intermediate and 30% advanced. It is a 7-minute free shuttle from the station (about 1 km on foot), 3 minutes from Yuzawa IC, with about 2,000 free parking spaces. Tickets change by day: ¥5,500 on weekdays, more at weekends. Yuzawa Kōgen湯沢高原

West exit: 10 min walk, then a 7 min ropeway · 18 Dec to 4 Apr

The slope sits above the town and is reached by the Yuzawa Kōgen ropeway (7 minutes), so lunch and an onsen are quick. Eight courses with a top of 1,170 m and a base of 370 m, about half of them for beginners, and a longest run of 5 km on gentle pitches (28 degrees at the steepest). Two snow escalators are part of the lift network.

The adult day ticket is ¥6,900 (4 hours ¥5,200, child ¥3,500, senior ¥5,800). Parking is limited to about 200 spaces, so the walk from the station is the usual way in. Best for beginners and for a half day on the day you arrive.

Where to stay

Echigo-Yuzawa, or the foot of Ishiuchi Maruyama

Fourteen stays. Check rates shows tonight's price for your dates.

How to choose: stay in Echigo-Yuzawa and every hill is a shuttle away, with shops, a sake hall and restaurants outside the door. Stay at Ishiuchi Maruyama if that mountain is the plan: you are at the base and the station is a 3-minute walk. Most of the town ryokan have their own baths, so a bath comes with the night. If you only ski for a day from Tokyo, you do not need to stay at all.

FAQ

Yuzawa ski questions, answered

Which Yuzawa ski area should I choose?

For the biggest mountain, Ishiuchi Maruyama: 23 courses, 13 lifts and a gondola, with a station 3 minutes on foot from the base. For night skiing and the shortest ride from Echigo-Yuzawa Station, Kandatsu. For beginners and families, Yuzawa Kōgen, Iwappara or Yuzawa Nakazato. For the cheapest day, Iwappara or Yuzawa Park. GALA Yuzawa and Naeba and Kagura are bigger and have their own guides.

How much is a day lift ticket at the Yuzawa ski areas in 2026-27?

Listed adult day tickets are Ishiuchi Maruyama ¥8,500, Yuzawa Kōgen ¥6,900, NASPA ¥7,000, Yuzawa Nakazato ¥6,700, Kandatsu from ¥5,500 on weekdays to ¥6,500 on Saturdays and special days, and Iwappara ¥5,500. Yuzawa Park was ¥4,500 last winter and has not posted 2026-27 prices. Prices can change in season.

When do the Yuzawa ski areas open in 2026-27?

Planned dates: Kandatsu 11 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, Ishiuchi Maruyama and Yuzawa Kōgen 18 December to 4 April, Iwappara, Yuzawa Nakazato 19 December to 28 March, NASPA 24 December to 28 March. Yuzawa Park has not posted dates; last winter it ran 20 December to 31 March. Real opening depends on snow.

Can I ski at night in Yuzawa and still get the last train to Tokyo?

Kandatsu skis from 18:00 to 02:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and the nights before holidays, but the last Shinkansen to Tokyo leaves Echigo-Yuzawa at 22:25, so that session means staying the night. Ishiuchi Maruyama (16:00 to 20:00) and Iwappara (17:00 to 19:00, to 20:00 on Saturdays) finish early enough for the 22:25 with time to spare.

Does the Hokuriku Arch Pass cover the Yuzawa ski areas?

No. Echigo-Yuzawa is on the Jōetsu Shinkansen, which the Hokuriku Arch Pass does not cover. The JR East Pass (Nagano, Niigata area) and the JR Pass do. For a single ski day from Tokyo, an ordinary return ticket at ¥6,900 each way usually costs less than a pass.

How long does it take to get to Yuzawa from Tokyo?

The Jōetsu Shinkansen takes 1h 07m from Tokyo to Echigo-Yuzawa at the fastest and costs ¥6,900. The first train leaves Tokyo at 06:08 and the last train back leaves Echigo-Yuzawa at 22:25. From the station, most hills are 3 to 10 minutes away by free resort shuttle.

Are the Yuzawa ski areas good for beginners and children?

Yes. Yuzawa Kōgen has about half beginner terrain, Iwappara has a Kids Paradise from ¥1,000, Yuzawa Nakazato has a kids park and a snow escalator, and Ishiuchi Maruyama is a broad, gentle mountain with a long family run. Beginners usually start on Yuzawa Kōgen or Iwappara.
