Two stations serve Myōkō: Joetsu-Myōkō on the Hokuriku Shinkansen (Tokyo → 2 hours) and Myōkō-Kōgen on the local Shinano / Echigo Tokimeki lines (closest to Akakura and the onsen villages, ~20 min south).
From Tokyo, every Hakutaka stops at Joetsu-Myōkō, the easiest international gateway. From there, free shuttles or a 12-minute local train get you to Myōkō-Kōgen, the closest station to the Akakura ski village. From Nagano, the local Shinano Railway runs direct to Myōkō-Kōgen in 45 minutes. From Itoigawa, the scenic Setsugekka sightseeing train runs on weekends.
Tokyo → Joetsu-Myōkō in ~2 hours, every 30–60 minutes. From Joetsu-Myōkō, a 12-minute local train (or free seasonal shuttle to Akakura) reaches the village.
Most Kagayaki services skip Joetsu-Myōkō; check the timetable. Tsurugi shuttles serve western Hokuriku only, not this stop.
From Nagano (Shinkansen interchange) the local Shinano Railway runs direct to Myōkō-Kōgen in 45 minutes. The closest station to Akakura, the onsen villages, and most ski resorts.

One of Japan’s great joyful trains. Glass-roofed observation cars, a kaiseki bento lunch on board, and a slow run through coastal Tokimeki then up the foothills toward Joetsu-Myōkō. Three hours total.
Reservation only, ~¥17,000–¥24,000 incl. meal. Often books out months ahead in foliage and cherry blossom seasons.
Closest station to Akakura, Ikenotaira, and most onsen villages. Free seasonal ski shuttles run to all the main resorts; taxis to Tsubame, Seki, and Suginosawa run year-round.
The station has a small tourist information centre with English maps, plus a one-man kaiseki ryokan walking distance.
